Salt Cell Cleaning: Why It Matters and When to Do It
Your salt cell is the heart of your saltwater pool. Here's how to keep it running efficiently and avoid costly replacements.

If you have a saltwater pool, your salt cell is doing the heavy lifting every day — converting salt into chlorine to keep your water sanitized. But like any hardworking component, it needs regular attention to stay effective.
In North Texas, hard water is a fact of life. That means calcium scale builds up on your salt cell plates faster than in other parts of the country. Left unchecked, that scale reduces chlorine output, forces the system to work harder, and shortens the life of your cell.
How Often Should You Clean Your Salt Cell?
In Collin County, we recommend cleaning your salt cell every 12 weeks — roughly once per quarter. Some pools with harder water or heavier use may need it more frequently.
Signs Your Salt Cell Needs Cleaning Now
- Low chlorine levels despite adequate salt in the water
- Your salt system is showing 'Inspect Cell' or error codes
- Visible white calcium deposits on the cell plates
- Algae growth despite running the salt system
- System running at 100% output but chlorine is still low
- It's been more than 3 months since the last cleaning
What Happens If You Skip Salt Cell Cleaning?
Calcium scale is an insulator. As it builds up on the cell plates, it reduces the electrical efficiency of the cell — meaning less chlorine gets produced per unit of electricity. Your system compensates by running longer and at higher output, which accelerates wear.
Over time, a heavily scaled cell can fail prematurely. Replacement salt cells cost anywhere from $300 to $900+ depending on the brand and model. Regular cleaning at $75 per visit is a much better investment.
How We Clean Salt Cells
Inspect the Cell
We remove the cell and inspect the plates for scale buildup, damage, or wear. We check the cell's output and compare it to expected performance.
Acid Wash
We use a diluted muriatic acid solution to safely dissolve calcium scale from the cell plates without damaging the coating.
Rinse and Reinstall
After cleaning, we thoroughly rinse the cell, reinstall it, and verify proper connections and flow.
Test and Document
We test the system output and water chemistry to confirm the cell is producing chlorine properly before we leave.
