How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?

DE, cartridge, or sand — each filter type has different cleaning schedules. Here's what every Collin County pool owner needs to know.

By Cameron Novak · 5 min read

Your pool filter is the unsung hero of a clean, healthy pool. But like any hardworking component, it needs regular attention. Most homeowners either clean it too rarely — or too often. Both can cause issues.

Here's a straightforward guide to each filter type and how to keep it running at peak performance in the North Texas climate. If you're looking for professional help, check out our filter cleaning service.

The 3 Types of Pool Filters

Cartridge Filters

The most common filter type in newer North Texas pools. Cartridge filters use pleated polyester to trap debris and are easy to maintain.

  • Deep clean: Every 3–6 months (soak in filter cleaner solution)
  • Replace: Every 2–3 years, or when the pleats show wear

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

DE filters offer the finest filtration — they can catch particles as small as 2–5 microns. They require a bit more maintenance but deliver crystal-clear results.

  • Backwash: When pressure rises 8–10 PSI above normal
  • Full teardown & clean: Twice a year (or after a green pool event)
  • Recharge: Add fresh DE powder after every backwash

Sand Filters

Sand filters are the lowest-maintenance option. They use specially graded sand to trap debris and are cleaned by backwashing.

  • Backwash: Every 4–6 weeks, or when pressure rises 8–10 PSI
  • Sand replacement: Every 5–7 years
  • Pro tip: Use a sand filter cleaner once a season to remove oils and scale

Signs Your Filter Needs Attention Now

  • Cloudy or hazy water despite balanced chemistry
  • Pressure gauge reading 8–10 PSI above your normal baseline
  • Reduced water flow from return jets
  • Algae keeps coming back even after treatment
  • Visible debris passing through the filter

North Texas Tip: Clean More Often in Spring & Fall

Collin County pools deal with heavy pollen in spring and leaf debris in fall. During these seasons, your filter works overtime. We recommend checking pressure weekly. Homeowners in McKinney, Prosper, Celina, Anna, and Melissa should stay especially vigilant during these seasons.
